The Problem With Most Valentines Gifts
Flowers are dead by the twenty first. Chocolates are gone by the sixteenth. The card ends up in a drawer.
None of that is a criticism. They are pleasant, and they are also completely interchangeable, which is the actual problem. Whatever you spent, it looks exactly like what everybody else bought that week.
A customized Valentines gift solves that in the simplest possible way. It carries a photograph only the two of you have.
Upload the picture, see a free preview of exactly how it will print, and order only if you like it. Prices start at $25 and production takes about three days.
One date matters more than anything else on this page. Order by February 1. Production plus shipping runs a week or more, and February is our busiest stretch of the year.
The rest of this page covers what to make depending on how long you have been together, which photos work, what to do if you are apart on the day, and the honest cutoff dates.
What to Make, Based on How Long You Have Been Together
This is the single most useful filter, and almost no gift guide uses it. The right customized Valentines gift at year five is the wrong one at month three.
Under six months
Keep it light. A small photo cushion from a day you both enjoyed says you paid attention without saying anything alarming. Avoid anything life sized, and avoid printing their face at dinner plate scale. That is a year two joke.
Six months to two years
The sweet spot for something bigger. A photo cushion of the two of you, a shaped cushion of something that is an inside joke, or a heart shape with a date on it. This is also where the funnier options start landing well rather than landing strangely.
Two years and beyond
You can go fully ridiculous or fully sentimental and both work. A full body pillow of your partner is genuinely funny at this stage. So is a collage of the last few years. Long term couples are also the ones most likely to order a matching pair.
Married
Wedding photos are the obvious choice and they do work, but the photo from an ordinary Tuesday often lands harder. If you have children or a pet, a family collage tends to beat a couples photo by a wide margin.
Not officially anything yet
Print something that is not a person. An inside joke, a place you both went, a drawing. It reads as thoughtful rather than as a declaration, which is usually what you want in February of an undefined situation.

See It Before You Commit to It
The nervous part of buying a personalized gift is that you are paying for something you have never seen, for a person whose reaction matters to you.
So we show you the finished design first. Upload the photo and it appears on the product at the size and shape you chose, with the exact crop you will get.
If the crop clips somebody's head you find out now. If the photo is too dark you find out now. Move it, swap it, try a different format, start over. There is no limit and no charge until you order.
It also doubles as a last minute rescue. If you have missed the shipping cutoff, the preview image is something you can actually show them on the day.

Choosing the Photo Without Overthinking It
Most people spend an hour scrolling and pick the wrong one. Here is the shortcut.
Candid beats posed
The photo where you are both mid laugh at something off camera ages far better than the one where you are both looking straight at the lens with your good smile. You will see this object every day. Pick the one that feels like the two of you rather than the one that looks best on a phone screen.
Close enough to see faces
A wide shot of two tiny figures on a beach is a beautiful memory and a poor cushion. On a 40 cm cushion those faces end up the size of a coin. Crop in before you upload, or pick a closer photo.
The technical bit
At least 1500 pixels on the short side. Recent phone photos clear that easily. Screenshots and pictures forwarded through messaging apps are compressed and usually do not, so dig out the original file rather than the copy someone sent back to you.
The preview warns you before you pay if a file is too small, so you are never guessing.
Square photos fit best
The standard cushion is square. A wide landscape shot loses its sides and a tall portrait loses the top and bottom. Check the preview rather than assuming your favourite survives the crop.
If you genuinely cannot choose
Use a collage of up to nine. It removes the decision entirely and works well when the point is the accumulation of time rather than one particular day.
Valentines Gifts We Made Last Year
If You Are Apart on February 14
February is the month long distance couples find us. Deployment, university, a work posting, visa timing, or simply two cities. The logistics matter more than the gift here, so this section is the practical part.
Ship it straight to them
Enter their address at checkout rather than yours. There is no invoice or pricing in the parcel, so it arrives as a gift. This also removes a week of transit, which matters when you are already close to the cutoff.
Order earlier than domestic
International shipping adds time and customs can add more. For an overseas partner, late January is the realistic cutoff rather than February 1.
What long distance couples actually order
Full body pillows, overwhelmingly. The scale is the point. A cushion says here is a photo of me. A full length pillow is closer to here is roughly me, and that difference is why it is the most requested option in this group by a long way.
The matching pair option
Order two, one of each of you, and send one in each direction. Couples separated for a fixed period do this constantly, and it costs no more per item than ordering one.
A note on timing the surprise
Tracked shipping means you can see when it lands. If you want them to open it on the day, aim for delivery two or three days early and ask them to wait, because parcels arriving exactly on February 14 is not something anyone can promise.

The Honest Cutoff Dates
Every gift site tells you to order early and none of them tell you when it actually stops being possible. Here are the real numbers.
How long it takes
- Production: about three days
- Domestic shipping: four to eight business days
- International: add three to seven days, plus customs
The dates
- Late January: comfortable, including international
- February 1: the safe domestic cutoff
- February 5: possible, but tight, and we cannot promise it
- After February 5: order it anyway and give them the preview image on the day
That last option is not a joke
If you have left it late, order anyway and screenshot the preview. Showing somebody the thing that is being made for them, with the real design on screen, is a genuinely good save. The object turns up the following week and the moment still happened on the day.
Why February is tighter than December
Christmas orders spread across six weeks. Valentines orders arrive in about ten days, almost all of them for the same delivery date. That compression is the reason the cutoff is firmer than you would expect for a smaller holiday.
Four Ways Personalized Gifts Go Wrong
We see the same four mistakes every February, and all of them are avoidable in about a minute.
Using a screenshot
The photo you screenshotted from their Instagram is a fraction of the original resolution. It looks fine on a phone and soft at cushion size. Ask them to send the original, or use a photo from your own camera roll.
Too much text
A whole paragraph printed across a cushion is unreadable from more than a metre away and makes the design look busy. A name, a date, or four words. That is the limit.
Going too big too early
A life sized print of somebody you started dating in December is a story they will tell their friends, and not in the way you want. Scale the object to the length of the relationship.
Ordering on February 10
This is the big one. Nothing about the product can be rushed past the physics of printing and posting it. The preview screenshot rescue works, but ordering a week earlier works better.
Avoid those four and the rest is straightforward. Upload, preview, order.
What to Actually Order, by Format
Deciding what to make is usually harder than deciding to make something. Here is the shortlist, with the detail pages for each.
For a partner you will not see on the day, a custom body pillow is the format long distance couples choose most, because the scale is the point rather than the picture.
For a first or second Valentines together, keep it smaller. A custom photo pillow from a day you both enjoyed says you paid attention without overcommitting.
For couples who find each other funny, a custom face pillow is the reliable option. It is absurd, it photographs well, and it gets kept.
For a heart, an initial or an inside joke rather than a photograph, custom shaped pillows cut the cushion to the outline instead of printing it on a square.
And if you share a pet, that is very often the safest Valentines gift in the entire list. Start at custom pet pillows.
