Custom Graduation Gifts Made From A Photo

Almost everything given at a graduation arrives at the exact moment somebody is trying to own less, not more. They are packing a room into a car. A framed certificate holder, a heavy book, a desk ornament: all of it is one more thing to find space for.

The gifts that survive that move are the ones that go on the bed in the next place. Soft, packable, and about somebody they are leaving behind.

Who they are actually missing

Not the school. In our experience of what people order at this time of year, it is one of three things: the dog, the friends who are scattering to different cities, or the family home itself.

The dog is the one people underestimate. A nineteen year old moving into halls will tell you they are fine, and then keep a printed photograph of their dog on the bed for three years.

Two directions

High school into university, where the gift is usually from parents or grandparents and is about home. University into work, where it is usually from friends and is about the group breaking up. The photographs are completely different, and so is the reaction.

The family dog, for a dorm room

Cut to the dog's outline rather than left square, so it reads as the animal. This is the single most ordered version at this time of year, usually bought by a parent who knows exactly how much that dog is going to be missed.

The friendship group, as a collage

Nine photographs covering four years, on a square cushion. It works better than one group shot because each face keeps its own space, and because the point is the accumulation rather than any single night.

One friend, as a joke

A face cut around the head, printed large, given to somebody moving to another country. It is a joke and it also means they will not forget what you look like, which is the honest reason it gets bought.

The family, for somebody moving far

For international students especially, where visits home are a flight rather than a train. At full length it stops being decorative and becomes something to sleep against in a room that does not feel like home yet.

A grandparent who could not travel

Graduations are often the ceremony grandparents miss. A printed photograph of them, given on the day, is a small correction to that.

Graduation photographs have a specific problem. The best ones are usually the worst files.

The picture everybody loves is the one from a night out four years ago that has been sent through three group chats and saved from somebody's story. Every one of those steps compressed it. Track down whoever took it and get the original from their camera roll, because it almost certainly still exists.

Group shots crop badly

A wide photograph of eight people has to lose something at the edges when it becomes a square or an outline. Check the preview carefully. If somebody important is at the far left, a collage of separate photos protects them better than one wide shot does.

For a pet

Crouch until the camera is level with their eyes. Photographs taken from standing height enlarge the nose and shrink the head, which is the single most common problem we see on animal orders.

Daylight beats a ceiling light every time, and a phone from the last few years is more than enough camera.

Graduation season is compressed. Most ceremonies land in a few weeks in May and June, and everybody remembers at the same time.

Production is three days from when you approve the preview, not from when you order. Approving is usually same day. Shipping is added after that and depends on the destination.

• Inside a week usually works, but the courier is the variable rather than the workshop
• After the day is fine too. Most of these gifts are for the room they move into, not the ceremony itself

Send it to the new address

If they have already moved, put their new address at checkout. For anyone starting somewhere far from home, a parcel arriving in the first week is worth more than the same object handed over at a ceremony.

If the group is splitting the cost

There is no bulk tier to chase, so five identical orders cost five times one. One person places them, everybody sends their share, and each parcel can go to a different address.

Student rooms are small and shared, which changes the answer from the usual one.

• Cut to an outline. Reads as the dog or the person rather than as a cushion. Best for a single subject, and the version most likely to end up on the bed.
• Square cushion. The right choice for a collage, and it doubles as something to sit on, which in a student room matters.
• Full length. 150 cm. For somebody moving far from home or leaving a partner behind. It takes up a third of a single bed, which is either the point or a problem.

Size, honestly

The middle size is the safe answer for a room somebody has not seen yet. The largest is a statement, and in halls a statement has to live somewhere.
