What a custom face pillow is

A cushion printed with somebody's face, cropped so the face fills most of the surface rather than sitting in the middle of a scene. It is equal parts sincere gift and excellent joke, and which one it turns out to be depends entirely on whose face you choose and how large you order it.

The idea is old. The reason it keeps working is that a face at pillow scale sits in an odd gap between a photograph and a person, and nobody quite knows how to react to it. That reaction is the product.

Square, or cut around the head

The square version keeps whatever was behind them in the original photo. It behaves like a cushion, it fits on a sofa without comment, and it is the right choice when the background is part of the memory.

The die cut version is cut around the outline of the head and hair. The background is gone entirely and the finished object reads as a floating head. It does not sit quietly on a sofa. This is the version people film themselves opening.

Face only, or face on a body

A face on a cushion is a joke, and a good one. A face at the top of a full length pillow is something else. It is huggable rather than funny, and it is what people order when somebody is deployed, at university, or living three time zones away. The photo carries almost all the risk

On most printed products the image is one element among several. Here it is the entire product, blown up larger than the face has probably ever been printed. Every soft edge, every bit of compression and every awkward angle is magnified.

What to send

The sharpest photo you have. Facing the camera. Even light, meaning window light or overcast daylight rather than a ceiling bulb directly overhead, which drops shadows into the eye sockets. A little space around the head, so the hairline is not already cropped off at the top of the frame. At least 1500 pixels on the short side.

What not to send

Screenshots. Photos forwarded through a messaging app. Images saved from social media. All three have been compressed at least twice, and the detail that has been thrown away cannot be put back. Go into the camera roll and send the original file. This one habit accounts for most of the difference between a face pillow that looks sharp and one that looks like a poster of a photograph.

What we fix for you

Crop, straightening, headroom and the cut line. People almost never leave enough space around the head in a casual photo, so recropping is standard rather than exceptional. We also clean the outline where hair meets background, which is the part that separates a clean die cut from a papery one. All of that happens before the preview, and the preview happens before payment.

Picking a size, and what each one does socially

At 20 cm it is an ornament. It sits on a desk, it fits in a stocking, and it reads unambiguously as a joke.

At 40 cm it is close to the size of an actual head. This is what most people order, and it is the size that makes visitors do a double take when they notice it on a sofa.

At 60 cm it is considerably larger than a real head. Nobody orders this by accident. Order it when the scale is the point.

Where it sits next to the other shapes

Questions worth answering before you order

Can I put more than one face on it?

Yes. Two people side by side works well at 40 cm and above. More than three faces on one cushion stops being legible from across a room, which is usually the point of the object.

Do sunglasses or hats cause problems?

No. A hat becomes part of the outline and usually improves the die cut shape. Sunglasses print fine. A side profile cuts beautifully and is underused.

Is it definitely going to be funny?

That depends on the recipient and it is worth thinking about for two seconds. A face pillow of somebody who enjoys attention is a great gift. A face pillow of somebody who does not is a slightly complicated one. The sincere version, a partner or a parent, tends to land regardless.

What if I change my mind after seeing the preview?

Nothing has been charged at that point, so you either ask for changes or you walk away. Payment happens after approval.
