What Kind Of Custom Plush This Is
Custom plush means two quite different things, and it is worth knowing which one you want before you order anything.
The first is a sewn plush: a fully three dimensional soft toy made from fabric pieces cut to a pattern, like a teddy bear. A designer interprets your drawing or photo, a sample is made and corrected, and production usually takes weeks, often with a minimum order.
The second is a printed plush, which is what Hugabu makes. Your actual image, whether a drawing, a pet or a person, is printed on both sides of soft fabric, filled, and cut to the outline of whatever is in the picture. It is a plush cushion shape rather than a figure with sewn on ears, and the likeness is exact, because it is the image itself rather than somebody's interpretation of it.
That makes it the right choice when likeness matters most: a pet's real markings, a child's drawing with every wobbly line, a person's actual face. There is more detail on how the outline is cut and checked if you want the technical side.
Your Pet, With Their Real Markings
A sewn plush of a pet is an approximation. The fabric comes in a handful of colours, so a brindle coat becomes brown, a patchy cat becomes two tones, and the expression depends on how the eyes were stitched.
A printed plush uses the photograph. Every patch, every grey hair on the muzzle, the one ear that never stood up properly, all of it is there because it is in the picture. Owners tend to recognise their own animal instantly, which is the whole point.
Choose a photo where the whole animal is visible and nothing overlaps it, and you get a plush version of your pet cut around its own silhouette.

What People Turn Into Plush
A child's drawing
The classic. A monster, a dinosaur, a self portrait with seven fingers. Children are genuinely amazed to see a creature they invented become a real soft thing they can carry around, and every line stays exactly as they drew it.
A pet
Dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, a particularly characterful chicken. Printed plush keeps the exact markings that a sewn version would have to simplify.
A person
A best friend, a grandparent who lives abroad, a partner on a long posting, or yourself as a joke gift. The face is the photo, so there is no doubt who it is.
An original character
Illustrators, streamers and webcomic artists turn their own characters into plush for themselves, for giveaways or for a small run of merch. For full length character art, dakimakura printing with no minimum is the larger format.
A brand or event mascot
Small businesses, clubs, schools and events use printed plush of their mascot for prizes and staff gifts. With no minimum order, ten is as easy as one.
A pet that has died
Many people order a plush to hold after losing an animal. Memorial plush of a pet are handled personally when you mention it in the order notes.

A Plushie Of A Real Person
Sewn plush of people tend to end up looking like generic dolls with the right hair colour. A printed plush of a person is instantly that person, because it is their face.
The most popular version is the head on its own, cut around the hairline, which is funny at a party and oddly comforting for somebody who lives far away from the person on it. Full length versions work too, as a 150 cm plush of somebody standing.
For the head version, face plush cut around the hairline explains which photos crop cleanly and which do not.

Getting An Image That Makes A Good Plush
Because the plush is cut to the outline of the image, the shape matters as much as the picture itself.
For drawings
- Bold outlines and filled in colour cut more cleanly than faint pencil sketches.
- Photograph the paper flat in daylight from directly above, with no shadow across it.
- Compact shapes work best. Very long, thin parts like a wand or a tail drawn as a single line get absorbed into the border.
For photos
- The whole subject should be in frame, with nothing cropped off at the edges.
- A plain background that contrasts with the subject gives the cleanest outline.
- Use the original file rather than a screenshot or a version sent through a chat app.
The free preview shows the print and the exact cut line together, so you can see the finished shape before anything is made.

Printed Plush Or Sewn Plush?
Both are real options. They are good at different things.
- Likeness. Printed plush shows the image exactly. Sewn plush is an interpretation made from a limited range of fabric colours.
- Shape. Sewn plush can be fully three dimensional, with ears, limbs and a body that sits up. Printed plush is a filled cushion shape cut to the outline.
- Time. Printed plush is made in days. Sewn plush usually takes weeks, including a sample round.
- Quantity. Printed plush has no minimum. Sewn plush makers often require a minimum run, especially for merch.
- Detail. Photographs, fur texture and fine artwork print perfectly. Sewn plush handles bold, simple designs best.
Choose sewn plush if you need a three dimensional figure or a large run of a simple design. Choose printed plush when the exact image matters, when you only need one, or when it has to arrive soon. If you want to compare every format side by side first, every custom pillow format we print lays them out together.
Plush For Kids, Collectors And Creators
For families
Parents order plush of children's drawings for birthdays, of the family pet for a child starting school, and of grandparents who live far away so small children can hug them between visits. The 20 and 40 cm sizes suit small hands and beds.
For collectors and fans of their own work
Artists who have drawn the same character for years often want one physical version of it. A printed plush is the quickest way to hold your own creation, and it reproduces linework and colour exactly as drawn, which sewn plush rarely can.
For creators and small brands
Streamers, podcasters, webcomic artists and small shops use printed plush for giveaways, community prizes and limited merch. There is no minimum order, so you can test a design with a handful before committing to more. There is also no bulk price, so the cost per piece is the same at five as at fifty.
Whichever group you are in, the process is the same: upload the image, check the print and the cut line in the free preview, and approve it when it looks right.
Sizes, Both Sides And Care
- 20 cm, a pocket sized plush for a child's hand, a desk or a keepsake shelf.
- 40 cm, the most ordered size and roughly life size for a cat or a small dog.
- 60 cm, for a larger dog, a person's head as a joke, or a mascot that needs presence.
- 150 cm, in the body pillow format, for full length people and characters.
Both sides are printed at no extra cost. Most people use the back for the reverse view of the same subject, like the back of a dog or a character, or for a second image entirely. Each plush arrives filled and sewn shut, ready to give. The image is dyed into the fibres rather than sitting on the surface, so it survives being hugged, dropped, chewed at the corners by a toddler and washed on a cool cycle.
What Does Not Work As A Printed Plush
Most images make a good plush. A few predictable ones do not, and it saves time to know them before uploading.
- Very thin parts. Whiskers, antennae, swords, balloon strings and tails drawn as a single line are too narrow to cut and get absorbed into the border around the shape.
- A tiny subject in a big photo. A dog in the far corner of a garden photo will look blurry when enlarged to plush size. Choose a photo where the subject fills most of the frame.
- Overlapping subjects. Two pets curled together cut as one combined shape. That can be lovely, but it is worth knowing in advance.
- Busy backgrounds touching the edges. When the background is a similar colour to the subject, the outline is harder to find. A plainer photo gives a cleaner cut.
- Characters owned by somebody else. Studio, publisher and game company characters cannot be printed, including fan art of them. Your own characters, commissioned art you have permission for, and your own mascots are all fine.
- Expecting a sewn figure. If you need a plush that stands up with three dimensional limbs, a sewn plush maker is the better route.
The preview catches the technical issues. If an outline is not going to cut well, you see it before paying, not after.
