A custom face pillow is a cushion printed with somebody's face, usually cropped tight so the face fills most of the surface. You will also see it called a photo face pillow, a face cutout pillow, or simply a pillow with a face on it.

There are two main formats, and they are not the same product.

Face only

A cushion, usually square or cut to the shape of the head, showing the face and not much else. This is the version people mean when they say face pillow. It is bold, it is funny, and it works as a desk or sofa cushion.

Face with body

A full length body pillow where the face sits at the top and the body continues below. This is a custom face pillow with body, and it is the one that reads as a person rather than a joke.

How it is printed

Your photo goes onto the fabric using dye based inks that sit inside the fibers rather than on top. Nothing peels, nothing cracks, and the print survives washing. Standard printing is double sided, so you can put the same face on both sides or a different one on the back.

What comes in the box

A finished pillow, filled and sewn shut, ready to use. Face pillows are not sold as covers, because a face shaped cushion needs its own filling to hold the shape.

What you can print

What we cannot print

Celebrities, public figures, and any character or image you do not own. Printing your friend as a birthday joke is fine. Printing somebody famous is not.

A face pillow lives or dies on the photo. The face gets enlarged more than on almost any other print product, so every flaw in the original shows up.

Sharp beats meaningful

This is the hard one. The photo you love most is often not the photo that prints best. If it is blurry, low resolution, or badly lit, enlarging it makes all three worse. Pick the sharpest photo of that person you have, even if it is not your favorite.

Resolution

At least 1500 pixels on the short side, and more is better. Recent phone photos are usually fine. Screenshots, images saved from Instagram, and anything sent over WhatsApp are compressed and often too soft. Our preview warns you before you order, not after.

Face the camera

Straight on or close to it works best. Heavy side angles look strange when flattened onto fabric, because the shape of the pillow expects a roughly symmetrical face.

Even light, no harsh flash

Direct flash flattens features and blows out skin tones. Window light or overcast daylight is ideal. Shadows across half the face will print exactly as they appear.

Watch the edges

Leave a little room around the head. A photo cropped tight to the hairline gives us nothing to work with, and the top of the head can end up cut off.

Sunglasses, hats and masks

They all print fine, they just make the pillow less recognizable. If the joke depends on people knowing who it is, use a clear face.

Pets

Same rules, one addition. Get down to their eye level. Photos taken from above make the nose enormous and the head small, which prints as a very strange pillow.

The quick checklist

• Sharp, not just sentimental
• 1500 pixels or more on the short side
• Facing the camera
• Even lighting, no direct flash
• Some space around the head

Run your photo through the preview and look at it full size. If it looks good on screen at that size, it will look good on fabric.

Face pillows come in more variations than people expect, and the choice changes both the price and the effect.

Square cushion

The standard. Your photo printed on a square cushion, usually around 40 x 40 cm. Cheapest, easiest to display, and the most common choice for gag gifts and desk pillows.

Die cut to the shape of the head

The pillow is cut around the outline of the face and hair rather than being square. This is the version that gets the biggest reaction, because it reads as a floating head rather than a printed cushion. It costs more because the cutting and sewing is custom for every order.

Face with body

A full length pillow, roughly 150 x 50 cm, with the face at the top. This is the custom face pillow with body format. It is the largest, the most expensive, and the one that feels most like a person.

Mini versions

Small enough to sit on a desk or clip to a bag. Popular as party favors and stocking fillers, and cheap enough to order in a batch.

Which one to choose

• For a joke: die cut head, every time
• For a desk or sofa: square cushion
• For someone missing a person: face with body
• For a group gift or an event: minis in bulk

Filling and printing

Every version arrives filled. The stuffing is a polyester fiber fill that holds shape without going lumpy. Double sided printing is standard on every size, so you can use the same face on both sides, two different faces, or a face on one side and a plain color on the other.

Pricing starts at $25 for the smallest formats. Die cut shapes and full body versions cost more because of the extra cutting and material. The exact price shows before checkout with nothing added afterward.

The biggest group by a wide margin. Somebody turns thirty, somebody leaves a job, somebody loses a bet. A face pillow arrives. The recipient complains loudly and then puts it on their bed.

A leaving gift for a colleague, a mascot for a team, a photo booth prop, or a run of minis with a founder's face on them for a company party. There is no minimum order, so ten is as easy as one.

Weddings and parties

Bachelor and bachelorette parties order these constantly, usually with the groom or bride's face. They also turn up at reunions and milestone birthdays.

Themselves

Yes. People buy face pillows of their own face. It usually starts as a joke in a group chat and ends with a real order. Whatever the reason, the process does not change. Upload, preview, order.

Washing

Face pillows are filled, so they do not unzip like a cover. Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap for everyday marks. For a full wash, use a gentle cold cycle in a laundry bag and let it air dry completely before use.

Do not tumble dry on heat and do not iron the print. Heat is the only thing that damages a dye based print.

Keeping the shape

Fluff it by hand every few weeks, the same way you would any cushion. The fiber fill recovers on its own.

Will the face fade

Not noticeably. The ink is in the fibers, so there is no surface layer to crack or peel. Keep it out of constant direct sunlight and it will hold color for years.

Gifting tips

• Order at least two weeks ahead for a specific date
• Do not tell them. The reaction is the whole point
• For a group gift, order minis for everyone and one full size for the target
• Around Christmas and Valentines Day, order earlier than you think you need to

If the print does not match the preview you approved, tell us and we reprint it. The preview exists so that this almost never happens.
