Why Housewarming Gifts Are So Hard To Get Right
The standard options are a plant, a candle, a bottle, or a doormat with a pun on it. Each is sensible, and each is exactly what the other four guests are bringing. By the end of the evening there are three candles on the kitchen counter and a plant nobody knows how to keep alive.
Buying anything decorative for a new home is a gamble. You do not know the colour scheme, you do not know what they already own, and you have probably seen the place once at most.
A photograph sidesteps all of that. It does not have to match the curtains, because it is about the people rather than the room. And a cushion is one of the few things every new home is genuinely short of in its first month.
If the move is a couple's first place together, presents for two people starting out together covers more ideas along the same lines.
The Photo From The Day They Got The Keys
Almost every couple takes the same photo on moving day: two people grinning on a doorstep, holding a set of keys up to the camera. Almost nobody prints it.
Printed on a cushion, it becomes the first thing in the house that is about the house. It can stay square, or be cut into a heart rather than a square if the couple will appreciate it.
If they married in the last year or two, the same picture does double duty later as an anniversary present, because the first house and the first years of marriage tend to arrive together.

Housewarming Ideas That Are Not A Candle
The house they are leaving
For somebody moving out of a home they lived in for years, a photo of the old place, front door and all, is the gift nobody else thinks of. It matters most when the move was not entirely their choice.
The family home, for a first flat
When a son or daughter moves into their first place, a photo of the house they grew up in goes with them. Parents order this one more than anybody, usually the week before the boxes go.
The first photo from the new window
Most people send a picture of the view on their first evening. It is a slightly odd thing to print, which is precisely why it lands.
The pet, settled in
The dog on the new rug or the cat in the empty moving box. Pet cushions cut to the animal's outline are the version that gets laughed at first and kept longest.
The renovation, start to finish
For the friends who spent a year living in dust, nine photos from bare walls to finished kitchen, printed as a single photo grid, is a fair reward for all of it.

The Dog Has Already Claimed The Sofa
In a lot of new homes the first resident to fully settle in is the dog. Within a week it has a favourite corner of the sofa and a clear view of the front door.
A cushion printed with that dog, sitting in that exact corner, is a housewarming gift with a sense of humour. How the dog shaped version is cut explains the outline and the white border.
Cats work the same way, and tend to ignore their own cushion with a disdain owners find even funnier.

Getting The Photo Without Spoiling The Surprise
Housewarming presents tend to be bought the same week as the party, so the photo has to come from somewhere you can reach quickly.
- Their moving announcement. The post that said we got the keys is usually the doorstep photo, and the file attached to it is normally good enough to print.
- The family group chat. Whoever moved will have sent a picture of every room. Save the original image rather than a screenshot of the chat.
- Your own photos from visits to the old house. The garden in summer, the kitchen table, the front step at Christmas.
- A partner or flatmate. One message asking for the best picture from moving day costs nothing and keeps the surprise intact.
Upload what you find and the free preview shows whether it holds up at the size you want. A screenshot of a screenshot usually does not, and you find that out before paying rather than after.

Moves That Deserve More Than A Plant
Not every move comes with a party. These are the ones where people most often want something personal.
- A first flat after leaving home, when something from the family house makes the new one feel less empty.
- A couple's first house, often in the same year as the wedding, so a print from the wedding album is close to hand.
- Downsizing after a loss, when a photo of the person who is not making the move with them handles a hard week gently.
- Moving abroad, where a reminder of the people left behind earns its suitcase space.
- A move into a retirement flat or a care home, where the grandchildren printed on something soft makes an unfamiliar room feel like theirs.
The bigger the change, the more a familiar photograph earns its place.
Handing It Over At The Party
Housewarming gifts are usually opened in a hallway full of coats, which is not the moment for a long speech. A little planning helps the gift land.
- Wrap it in something that does not give the shape away. A cushion is instantly recognisable through tissue paper, and half the fun is the surprise of whose face is on it.
- Pair it with something small for the night itself, like a bottle or a bag of good coffee, so there is something to share at the party and something to keep afterwards.
- Keep the card short. Welcome home, and a line about why you chose that photo, is all it needs.
- If the house is far away or the party is not happening, send it a week or two after the move, once the boxes are unpacked and there is a sofa to put it on.
Sizes And Sending It To A Brand New Address
- 40 cm is the standard sofa cushion size and the safe choice when you have not seen the room.
- 60 cm suits a bed or a large corner sofa, and is the size to choose for a grid of photos.
- 20 cm fits a shelf, a desk or the console table in a hallway.
- The back prints at no extra cost, so the old house can go on one side and the new one on the other.
Deliveries to an address somebody moved into last week are the classic way a parcel goes missing, so double check the flat number and postcode. Plenty of people send it to themselves and carry it in on the night instead. The photo is dyed into the fabric, so it can go in the wash after the first party without cracking.
Housewarming Mistakes Worth Avoiding
Getting the reason for the move wrong
Not every move is happy. After a divorce or a bereavement, a photo of the old house can hurt rather than help. If you are not sure how somebody feels about leaving, choose a photo of them or their pet instead.
The wrong size for the space
A 60 cm cushion overwhelms a two seater sofa in a studio flat. For a small first place, 40 cm or 20 cm is kinder.
Sending it to the old address
It happens more than anybody admits, usually because the address was autofilled from an earlier order. Type the new one in fresh.
A photo they have never seen
A picture you took of the house from the street without telling them can feel odd. Use photos they took or shared themselves.
Forgetting who else lives there
A photo of one partner in a home shared by two, or of the parents in a house where teenagers also live, can feel like it belongs to half the household. Where you can, choose a picture that includes everybody who lives there, or the pet that belongs to all of them. If the gift really is for one person, say so on the card so nobody else feels left out.
Overloading the front
Nine photos on one cushion looks busy in a small new room. One strong photo on the front and a second on the back is calmer, and lets each picture be seen properly.
