Most anniversary gifts are romantic objects with no particular connection to the year being celebrated. Flowers are flowers. A dinner is a dinner. Both are lovely and neither of them says anything about this year rather than last year.

A printed photograph does, because a photograph is dated by its own contents. The haircut, the place, the coat somebody no longer owns. That specificity is the entire mechanism, and it is why the choice of picture matters more here than on any other occasion.

Choose from the year, not from the archive

The temptation is to pick the best photograph you have ever taken of the two of you. Resist it. A merely good photograph from the year you are marking carries more weight than a beautiful one from four years earlier, because the gift is about the year.

The exception is a photograph that has become the photograph, the one that is already on a wall or a phone background. That one is allowed regardless of when it was taken, because it stopped being about a date some time ago.

First

One photograph from one year, because there is only one year to draw on. A 40 cm cushion is the right scale. Adding the date turns it from a nice picture into a record of something.

Somewhere in the middle

By year three or four there is enough material for a collage, and a collage says something a single photograph cannot. It says there have been a lot of these. Four images stay readable at 40 cm and nine at 60 cm.

A long marriage

For a twenty fifth or a fiftieth, the strongest version is usually the wedding photograph itself, often a scanned print. These print better than people expect at 20 and 40 cm. Pairing the original wedding photo on one side with a recent photograph on the other is the version that tends to produce a reaction, and both sides print at no extra cost.

Apart this year

Anniversary orders involve older photographs more than any other occasion, so it is worth being clear about what that means.

A scanned print from decades ago usually prints well at 20 cm and 40 cm. At 60 cm it will show its age, because there is only so much detail in the original and enlargement cannot invent more. If you are working from a physical print, photograph it flat in daylight without a shadow across it, or scan it at the highest setting your scanner offers.

For recent photographs, send the original from the camera roll rather than a screenshot or an image forwarded through a messaging app. Each of those has already been compressed.

Adding the date

Send the words with the photograph and they get set into the layout. A date, two names, a short phrase. Keep it to a line. Text long enough to be a paragraph has to be printed too small to read.
