Buying for a partner has rules. Buying for a parent has rules. Buying for a best friend has almost none, which is why it is harder rather than easier.

The shops answer this with mugs that say best friend on them and necklaces that split in half. Both are fine and both are about friendship in general rather than about the specific fifteen years you two have.

What actually works

The photograph nobody else would understand. The one from a night that was not important at the time. Printed large, it is funny for a week and then it stays on the sofa for years, which is a better outcome than most presents manage.

The two versions

The ridiculous one is your own face cut around the head at a size that fills an armchair, so that when they move flat you are still there. The sincere one is a photograph of the two of you, printed properly, given the year somebody moves away.

Your own face, cut around the head

The classic. Give it in front of other people, because half the value is the reaction in the room. Bigger is funnier here, and the difference in price between the sizes is small enough that going large is the right call.

The photo from that night

Every friendship has one. Usually badly lit, usually taken by accident, and instantly recognisable to exactly two people. That is the point. Nobody else would ever print it.

The obvious one. Hand it over last, after everything else has been opened, because it ends the unwrapping and everybody reaches for a phone.

Somebody moving away

A leaving present that is also a joke about the leaving. It works because the room they are moving into is empty, and this is the first thing in it that is from home.

Graduation

A group splitting up across different cities at once. Matching cushions with the same group photograph, one for each person, is the version that gets organised in a chat and paid for by five people.

For no reason at all

A meaningful share of these are not for an occasion. Somebody found a photograph, thought it was funny, and ordered it on a Tuesday.

A friendship that is now long distance

For anything meant to be funny, go bigger than feels sensible. The size is most of the joke, and the gap in price between the sizes is smaller than the gap in reaction.
